Took a trip to New York for the first time, and more than seeing the touristy sights like Times Square and the Brooklyn Bridge, I was eager to check out as many fitness studios as possible! At this point, I’m fully vaccinated, studios in New York are actually open, and we’re over a year into semi-quarantine life — “semi” because things are slowly opening back up and getting on a plane was no longer a terrifying thought — so I was ready to go, and I was dragging my very own teammate and partner (Mico) with me.
10 days in New York and the goal is to hit at least three different studios. Here goes nothing!
Studio #1: Row House
On the morning of Memorial Day, Mico and I headed to Row House in Williamsburg. Upon checking in, they asked for our vaccine cards in the event that we wanted to take our masks off during the workout.
50 minutes of rowing and a few floor exercises definitely gets you a great workout. It was the first class I’ve ever taken that made you row to the beat, which was pretty fun. I’m personally really big on music setting the tone for my workout and it took me a while to figure out what the vibe was because it was a mix of Miley Cyrus, Sweet Home Alabama, some country music, and some rock. I don’t normally workout to country music so I found it a little funny, until I realized it was American themed music for Memorial Day. Regardless, I had fun and got a good sweat out of the experience.
Studio #2: SoulCycle
I was a little back-and-forth about if I wanted to take a SoulCycle class in New York or try something new until I checked the Williamsburg schedule and found that:
SoulCycle in New York offers Community Rides, which are classes taught by instructors in training for FREE!
My favorite instructor from SoulCycle At-Home — the lovely Miss Claire J. — was teaching a class while I was in town 🤯
Needless to say, I booked my spots right when the booking window opened at 12 noon on Monday. The following day, I attended a Community Ride taught by Elise Yeager, and she killed it leading her first class on the podium!
Two days later, I was back for another round. This time to join a class with Claire J. IRL and I was beyond excited. It was nothing short of incredible. The playlist was on point — as expected — packed with some of my favorites: The Internet, Goldlink, Beyonce, and more. I guess it is worth it to try SoulCycle where HQ is based. Zero regrets and all smiles.
Studio #3: [solidcore]
Even before I arrived in New York, I was so stoked to try [solidcore] out. I hadn’t been on a Megaformer since before the pandemic, so I even mentally prepared myself. I booked a class the Friday before I arrived and was looking forward to it all week.
… Only for me to get there seven minutes late and miss the class because the doors were locked five minutes after starting. I guess we’ll get ‘em next time. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Despite my major [solidcore] fail, I didn’t quite make it to three studios but at least I made it to three different classes on my 10-day trip! Felt incredibly rewarding to break a sweat in between all the indulgent meals New York has to offer.
